I have been counting my blessings. I haven’t had a positive response from the literary agent world since last May. I was inching closer and closer to 50 rejection letters. It was hard to keep upbeat and maintain my faith in a project that had gotten blown off by so many publishing insiders. (The last really personalized letter I got said, “As much as I’d like to see more books like this out there, publishers won’t take a look at them because they’re not selling.”)
So yes — I am extremely grateful that I’ve been given this chance, and I communicated as much to the agent. I kind of dropped out of the blue for her, and she’s both extremely accommodating and uncommonly courteous to an unsigned author.
