What's Past Is Prologue

My name is Ryan and I tell stories. I'm just a gangly kid with big shoes and bigger dreams.

There are few things that baffle me more than my country’s unrepentant sinner act. How many more people have to suffer and die and bear the brunt of a prickly society’s inability to grasp the full meaning of its civic bible?

Look at the cheesy pride on the faces of our leaders on the 4th of July, when they recite writ large the Declaration of Independence. Isn’t it great, they think, that we have this equality? How lovely for us. But they seem to stop short — they always seem to stop short — over grasping just what all men are created equal means.

To be in favor of equality is to be a feminist. To be in favor of equality is to be a gay rights activist. To be in favor of equality is to be a crusader for the rights of every single American, to understand that when we tell the world all men are created equal the world is listening, and we cannot let them down.
