What's Past Is Prologue

My name is Ryan and I tell stories. I'm just a gangly kid with big shoes and bigger dreams.

I enjoy reading your blog, and am extremely jealous of your flair for writing. Anyway, have you got any advice for me? I don't know if I should take a degree in English Literature ( because I romanticize a lot) or Politics and International Relations. Decisions, decisions... Gah. asked by Anonymous

I had the same dilemma when I was going into college. I’d been accepted at the University of Michigan, Hope College, and Kalamazoo College, and I was fully intent on going to one of those programs to study English… and then, at the last minute, I decided to go to Michigan State University’s James Madison College program.

Honestly, it’s a question of what you prioritize in your life. For me, the thought process went something like, I can be a writer no matter what, but I can’t work in politics without this kind of education. I wanted to (and still want to) do both, but it’d be pretty hard to convince the White House to hire me if I had a degree in English.

Of course, you could always split the difference and do a double major. Find a good program for what you’re looking for, and go for that.
